Model Parents Training workshop on parent-child communication in Nyakabiga

As part of the implementation of joint program to improve the sexual and reproductive health of adolescents and young people, the Service Yezu Mwiza (SYM),organized from 07 to 9 August 2019 an awareness-raising workshop on sexual and reproductive health of adolescents and young people for model parents of Nyakabiga zone on ” parent-child communication module”.

The purpose of this activity was to see how parents could educate other parents in the community who do not know information about Sexual and Reproductive Health and the initiation of parent-child dialogue in the family.

During this workshop, groups were formed to facilitate exchanges and participatory discussions so that each participant can answer the questions asked about each image box used.
The use of this method of image box allows to illustrate an environment conducive to parent-child dialogue on topics of the sexual and reproductive health of adolescents and young people by awakening the awareness of model parents present to become involved in changing adolescents’ and young people’s negative sexual and reproductive health behaviors.

"I did not stop communicating with my children, but that did not prevent my daughter who was studying in the second for an unwanted pregnancy. At the time of the exchanges and discussions on the tips to initiate the dialogue with the children, I noticed that I did not know the communication techniques parent-child ". At the end of the training, the model parents elected their representative and decided to schedule their activities to share with other parents the knowledge gained during the training.
They also made the commitment to contribute to collective change through the monitoring of their children's education and the sensitization of other parents of the community on the sexual and reproductive health of adolescents and young people.
