In order to support members of leprosy-affected people's associations, Service Yezu Mwiza and Action Damien organized a field trip for the distribution of food and school kits from June 18 to 21, 2019 in provinces of Rumonge, Makamba, Rutana, Cibitoke and Bubanza.
Some of the people affected by leprosy have a physical disability that does not allow them to tackle rural tasks or even trade. It is for this major reason that SYM and Action Damien wanted to support this category of people living in precarious conditions.
Physical disability caused by leprosy
This event was raised by different authorities including governors, the doctors of these five provinces, District Chief Officers, administrators and zone chiefs.
This activity is part of the socio-economic reintegration project for people affected by leprosy. The distribution consisted of 5 kilos of rice, 3 kilos of beans and 4 soaps for each household and, a uniform kit, notebooks and pens for the children of the members of the associations of Kizuka, Gatobo, Murago, two associations of Mudende, Nyanza-Lac, two associations of Giharo-Ngomante, two of Ndava Cibitoke, Nyamitanga and one of Kagwema in Bubanza. All 350 members grouped into 12 associations were served with food and school kits.
After the acquisition of this aid consisting of food and school kits, the members of these associations did not fail to express their joy :
“We warmly thank Action Damien and Service Yezu Mwiza for this food aid, it will be useful especially since the harvest has not been good this season. We also thank you for having thought of our children by giving them the school kit, now they will be able to go to school with complete equipment like other children. We ask you to always stay with us in the form of follow-up for support in capacity building”. Pascal Nzeyimana President of the association "Tuje hamwe twiyungunganye turwanye indwara y'imibembe".
The members of these associations are no longer hiding as they are aware that the worst can be avoided if leprosy is diagnosed early. They are proud to belong to an associative life, which reduces the rate of discrimination.
