In an effort to promote the sexual and reproductive health of adolescents and youth, the community leaders of Buterere organized a community awareness campaign on June 15, 2019, to apply the lessons learned from training provided by SYM through the joint program.

Community leaders facilitated by model parents and in collaboration with the local administration invited men and women, youth and adolescents between 10 to 24 years old to spread the message of SRH to the community through sketches.
In his opening speech, Buterere IIB vice District Manager pointed out that sexual and reproductive health among young people and adolescents is very difficult because of a lack of correct and complete information.
To alleviate this problem, he calls on the entire population, those of SAMARIRO in buterere IIB in particular to do everything to understand in the same way the issues of SRH that young people face.

The content of this sketch incites the gendarme parents (brutal parents) to the change of mentality and to be able to communicate with their children without scaring them in order to avoid risky behaviors: the sexual vagrancy among the educated and out-of-school young people and the consumption of drug addicts.

After the shooting scene of this gendarme parent who did not give the time for dialogue with his children and gave orders in the form of intimidations, the observation is that he can push them to adopt a risky behavior because children can’t confide in him if they want information on the SRH, they go elsewhere to ask for help which can lead them to have a wrong information.
The facilitator made a comment on this scene to get the participants to exchange in order to find a better approach.

Reactions of participants after awareness

“I, too, am a gendarme parent, but this awareness has just given me important information about SRH and also the best way to start a reassuring conversation with my children. I have been touched by these lessons, I will change attitude and apply this method in my family because I find that I may lose the trust of my children if I do not change». Testifies one of the participants. At the end of the activity, a model parent gave an important message to the participants: “It is necessary that parents become friends of their children to gain their trust, it is also necessary to create a favorable climate for dialogue without giving up the responsibility parental control. This will provide an opportunity for their children to request information on the SRH without fear of being reprimanded”. After these activities, the participants thanked the organizers of this event because they learned many things that could help youth have a bright future, a future where every young person and teenager will feel free to talk about SRH with their parents without fear.
