Mrs. Jacqueline, responsible for 7 members of her family, is one of the beneficiaries of the Nurem Project, a project set up by Service Yezu Mwiza to raise the standard of living of its vulnerable beneficiaries by integrating them in income generating activities.
Service Yezu Mwiza had granted its vulnerable beneficiaries goats, pigs, rabbits, chickens and capital for those who want to do business and agriculture. "I started with goats and they multiplied. When SYM initiated the kitchen gardens, it also gave us the idea to diversify our income generating activities. Since the government banned the grazing of domestic animals, keeping them has become a headache. I then migrated to pig breeding, since breeding and farming go hand in hand, I had a slightly bigger vision of renting a space for growing vegetables so that if once this disease invades our goats, we cannot lose everything ”.
“In addition to the Kitchen Gardens, I rented a plot of land to plant the amaranths. Thanks to the compost that comes from the livestock, I had enough vegetables that I could sell at the market and the proceeds from the sale allowed me to expand the project ”, she adds.
She also indicates that what she considered a dream is becoming a reality: "Before joining the project, when I saw my neighbors with goats and cows, I dreamed of being like them, but I did not see how to achieve it because of lack of capital. Today, I farm pigs at home and I have rented other land to plant tomatoes, eggplant, leeks and a large field of sweet potatoes. All this, I owe to Service Yezu Mwiza which allowed me to realize my dream ”, she concluded.
Today, Madame Jacqueline's neighbors admire her fields and come to ask her for advice on the practices used to achieve such progress so that they can replicate the same at home.
Mrs. Jeanine, in charge of monitoring the implementation of the Income Generating Activities Project (NUREM), indicates that diversifying IGA allows beneficiaries to avoid returning to the starting point if an incident occurs on the IGA in question. "This beneficiary is reaching a satisfactory level and could be a model for other beneficiaries to emulate. Most of the beneficiaries live in places where they have to walk long distances to reach their homes, so to see a group that reaches this level is a sense of satisfaction for me ", she says.
It should be noted that the monitoring of beneficiaries in the implementation of IGA is of paramount importance to sustain the achievements of this project, because it allows them to be supervised and receive advice if necessary.
