ANC and Vaccination, a timely service package for SYM

Posted on 15/03/2022 - Category: Actualité du SYM ...

Pregnancy represents a period of potential fragility. This fragility can have an impact on the health of the mother but also on the health of the fetus. It is very important to take care of her body. Pregnant women who suffer from certain chronic diseases are likely to develop serious complications and are more likely to give birth to a premature or low-weight baby.

Doctor Emmanuel IRAMBONA points out that SYM is a follow-up structure for PLHIV and among them are pregnant women under PMTCT: "This service came at the right time because previously there was a gap, we followed them only for HIV and in terms of pregnancy, pregnant women went elsewhere for follow-up examinations, but for the moment they will no longer have to seek these services outside our structure”.

Devotee, a woman in her thirties, on PMTCT, came to SYM for the ultrasound examination of her second pregnancy. “I don’t know what to say, the first pregnancy I couldn’t do the ultrasound because I didn’t have the means to pay for this exam, the fact that this service is now available at SYM is a huge relief because we will benefit from the full package of services, and we will be able to know all the details of the pregnancy without changing management structure”, she tells us.

In addition to the ANC service, the immunisation service has also been opened at SYM, to enable children born under PMTCT, to receive the necessary vaccines, but also for any other children in need of vaccines.

Vaccination allows babies, to be protected against diseases that could have very serious consequences on their health. Vaccines stimulate the immune system, and help the child to build up antibodies against certain diseases without catching the disease.

It should be noted that Service Yezu Mwiza has more than 50 women under PMTCT and 57 children born to HIV-positive mothers followed by this center.
