SYM assists its vulnerable beneficiaries in hospital

Posted on 29/10/2021 - Category: Actualité du SYM ...

Service Yezu Mwiza (SYM), with the support of the Global Fund via the National HIV/AIDS Control Programme (PNLS), assists its most vulnerable beneficiaries in their medical care. Often these people do not have enough to pay for hospital costs, biological examinations, also food during hospitalization, not to mention, sometimes, the lack of a sick guard.

Some vulnerable beneficiaries may have serious complications that require hospitalisation or surgery, in which case SYM transfers these patients to hospitals that can better treat these pathologies. Once the patients are transferred, SYM also ensures that they receive the necessary treatment but also provides them with nutritional and psychological assistance

Dr Bella NIHORIMBERE, head of the Martin Royackers Clinic, told us about the follow-up of two cases of these recently assisted beneficiaries:
"The first is a beneficiary in her forties who suffers from a chronic illness that prevents her from coming in person sourcing ARV drugs. We then made a home visit in order to carry out a proper medico-psycho-social follow-up. Once at her home, we found that she had signs of severe anaemia. Thanks to the efforts of the SYM, we were able to take her to a hospital for a transfusion, which was successful because the patient was discharged from hospital with an improved general condition and the biological control confirmed it.

The second is a beneficiary in her sixties who had been suffering from a uterine prolapse for more than six years; when she told us about her problem, SYM did what it could to assist her but the means required for her operation were high and SYM could not fully assist her to the detriment of other beneficiaries in need of assistance. It was therefore necessary to plead her case to the Ministry of National Solidarity, Human Rights and Gender for assistance, which was granted. The patient underwent the operation successfully with full assistance from the Ministry and returned home in good condition."

"As a SYM mediator who closely followed this patient, who was unable to do anything or even sit down because of the pain caused by her illness, I am delighted to see that after the operation, she has regained her zest for life and will be able to go about her daily activities in order to survive, since she is a widow and has no one to help her. case like this one, is what drives us to redouble our efforts to support the vulnerables.” Testifies Jean-Noel Mukunzi.
