Assistance with school kits for families affected by leprosy

Posted on 02/10/2021 - Category: Action Damien ...

Each year, Service Yezu Mwiza in collaboration with Action Damien and the National Integrated Leprosy and Tuberculosis Programme (PNILT) assists families affected by leprosy with school kits so that they can send their children to school.

It is within this framework that from 20 to 24 September 2021, such an activity was carried out in the endemic’s provinces of leprosy, namely Rumonge, Rutana, Makamba, Cibitoke and Bubanza, for the benefit of the members of the associations of the former and/or leprosy patient, where more than 900 schoolchildren benefited from school kits consisting of uniforms, exercise books and pens.

NDIKUMANA Mosius Napoleon, leprosy focal point within the PNILT, indicates that leprosy is a disease which, if not treated early on, can cause a physical handicap, thus plunging the person affected by it into extreme poverty. “Service Yezu Mwiza, Action Damien and the PNILT have therefore thought of assisting with school kits, those parents infected or affected by leprosy, who are unable to have school materials, so that their children do not fall victim to that situation and can go to school, as they are the future of tomorrow”, he adds.

Distribution of school kits to families affected by leprosyFor Edmond NDUWIMANA, responsible for the project "Socio-economic reintegration of people affected by leprosy" at SYM: the establishment of associations of people affected by leprosy has capital interest because many children have returned to school thanks to the joined efforts of SYM, Action Damien and PNILT; “here I will cite as an example, the case of the association of Muyama where 47 children who had dropped out of school, were able to return to school after having benefited from these school kits, to name but a few”.

The families affected by leprosy welcomed this assistance with joy because their children will be able to go to school and prepare their own future with peace of mind: “We thank Service Yezu Mwiza, Action Damien and the PNILT, who never stop supporting us, saving us from the shame of seeing our children stay at home, while those of others are at school. With these school kits, they too will join their peers”, says Félix Nimubona, president of “Turwanye umubembe” association in Nyanza lac in Makamba province.
