In its follow-up activities for people affected by leprosy living in the endemic provinces, Service Yezu Mwiza, in collaboration with Action Damien and PNILT, organised a series of home visits to the members of the associations in order to realize the level of their socio-economic reintegration and to check on the progress of their income generating activities.
This field visit, which took place from 28 to 30 June and from 5 to 9 July in Action Damien project’s action areas, is part of the support to members of associations in the fight against leprosy and tuberculosis.
After this field visit, Edmond Nduwimana, in charge of Action Damien project at SYM, explains the ins and outs of the visit: “During our visit, we realised that some members of the associations are still living in straw houses, a situation of extreme poverty, mostly due to their physical handicap caused by leprosy. These home visits are in some way an opportunity to gather necessary information on the real urgent needs of the members of these associations. We also visited the members of the associations that carry out income-generating activities. This is to see the progress of their IGAs and also to know the difficulties encountered, which can slow down or hinder their micro-projects in order to help them find a solution, as quickly as possible.”
It should be noted that this project has so far been implemented in eight provinces of Burundi namely Cankuzo, Ruyigi, Rutana, Makamba, Bururi, Rumonge, Bubanza and Cibitoke.SYM: Distribution of school kits to members of associations of people affected by leprosy
