SYM: Distribution of small ruminants to Nurem project beneficiaries

Posted on 12/07/2021 - Category: Projet AGRs ...

The Service Yezu Mwiza under the financing of the Jesuits of Nuremberg, proceeded in July 5–6, 2021 to a distribution of small ruminants consisting of rabbits and chickens to beneficiaries grouped in income-generating activities (IGA), with the aim of strengthening their micro-projects, but also allow them to have a balanced diet.

These activities were chaired by Fr Laurien Nyiribakwe sj, Director of Development; Christy Ininahazwe, sj, projects and programs coordinator at SYM and the responsible of NUREM project, Ms Jeanine Nduwayezu.

SYM's Projects and Programs Coordinator, Christy, SJ, said that the small ruminants will benefit the beneficiaries in two ways. Firstly, their manure can be used in the kitchen gardens, which will give a better yield; secondly, the hens will lay eggs that will be used to enrich their daily meals and the rest will be sold to cover other needs; and finally, since they multiply quickly, it will allow the beneficiaries to increase their earnings quickly.

The beneficiaries welcome this great initiative because they say: "the breeding of rabbits and chickens is less expensive, it is a good thing for us, because we will be able to generate profits in a short time".

Distribution activities of small ruminants to beneficiaries Fr. Laurien sj explained to the beneficiaries that with the little they already have, they can maximize it to make more profits, if this is done efficiently. "For this, I will visit you often to verify with my own eyes where you are with the growth and see how you maintain what service Yezu Mwiza gives you as small livestock, serving as a basis for the development of your micro-projects," he concluded.

The beneficiaries for their part did not fail to testify in good faith, of the activities of the Nurem project: "Some of us are new to the Nurem project, we have not yet managed to generate remarkable profits, but thanks to the goats that the Yezu Mwiza Service has granted us, we use their manure for our fields, some of them have already begun to give birth to kids, so this also heralds a promising future for our micro projects. The rabbits and chickens that we have just received today will be of great use to us, because they multiply quickly and we will consume part of them; however, their dung will also help us in the fertilization of our kitchen gardens", testified one of the beneficiaries.

Note that during this distribution more than 158 rabbits and 222 hens were distributed to the beneficiaries.
