SYM: Giving young people the opportunity to get acquainted with the world of work

Posted on 10/07/2021 - Category: Actualité du SYM ...

Most young people who complete their studies, struggle to find places to familiarise themselves with working life. At the same time, recruiters require candidates with previous experience in their job offers. It is in this context that Service Yezu Mwiza, as a centre for the management of HIV and tuberculosis, welcomes in its various services some young graduates offering them the chance to do professional internships.

The Executive Director of SYM reported on the aim of granting internships:

“The fact that our structure grants professional internships to young graduates allows them to acquire sufficient knowledge in the management of global health, and in particular in the management of vulnerable people living with HIV and tuberculosis.
It also allows us to awaken in them a spirit of compassion towards patients, as they are in permanent contact with these vulnerable people in their localities during the mobile clinic’s visits. After their internship period, they leave not only with more experience but also and above all marked by the human and Christian values that underpin the activities of Service Yezu Mwiza; this is our way of contributing to the promotion of integral health, by ensuring that those who pass through Service Yezu Mwiza put the flavour of kindness, compassion and self-giving at the heart of their services, for the well-being of those who turn to them. SYM is therefore proud to help these young people in their professional development.”

Testimonials from trainees from different services:

“After my university studies in the Faculty of Health Sciences, Laboratory Department, I had the opportunity to do my professional internship at SYM. A centre with a well-equipped laboratory for biological analysis. In addition to biochemical testing devices; serological and parasitological, this laboratory has in its possession the GeneXpert machine often used for the diagnosis of tuberculosis resistant to rifampin, a device available in very few healthcare facilities.
Familiarising myself with the handling of these devices and these various tests of analysis has been an asset for me, because it will allow me to realise my dream of becoming a professional laboratory technician with a sufficient intellectual background.”

“Since I was young, communication has always been my passion. Being an intern in this field at SYM was very useful for me because I acquired more communication skills. During field visits to SYM beneficiaries, I was able to meet them. We exchanged about their way of life which sometimes was not so much better.
My admiration was mainly focused on the “Heart” of SYM,which is, among other things, the "Mobile Clinic", this nomadic consultation towards people living with HIV (PLHIV), providing them with all the medical care they need. These PLHIV are the children of the country, our relatives, our acquaintances who have not chosen this vulnerability on their own, because they also want to live.
SYM’s assistance to orphans, the most deprived, the needy in general, could not escape my attention either. As every Christian is called to be at the service of his neighbour, SYM is a reflection of this love which is preached in the Gospel of Saint Matthew 25: 31-40.”

“My time at SYM as an intern in the Monitoring and Evaluation service was mainly marked by two things. First, I admired the dedication with which SYM's services are delivered to the most vulnerable PLHIV. Through the various projects and actions, everything is done to improve their quality of life and give them hope for a better tomorrow.
More specifically, I was touched by the actions of the NUREM project, whose ultimate goal is to strengthen the poorest beneficiaries economically through solidarity groups and IGAs, which are regularly monitored to ensure good results. Thus, despite their HIV status, they can provide for the basic needs of their families and gradually emerge from poverty.
Secondly, I saw a close-knit team, characterised by a love of work and of each other. Each member of SYM staff made my experience pleasant and unforgettable. Long live Service Yezu Mwiza!”

“My professional internship at SYM as a nurse was for me an opportunity to discover a profession in all its forms and understand in a global way the management of PLWHIV I learned a lot about prevention of new infections and treatment of HIV-positive people, based on the National HIV Management Protocol.
It was also an opportunity for me to learn about the combination of ARV molecules, their advantages for those who comply and the disadvantages for those who do not. I can't forget that psychosocial care is especially important for adherence to ARV treatment.”
