SYM soon to have an ANC service

Posted on 29/04/2021 - Category: PTME ...

Service Yezu Mwiza, thanks to the funding of Fundus Apostolicus et Caritativus Societatis Iesu (FACSI), has just acquired a new block «Mother and Child» which will house antenatal consultation (ANC) and prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PTME) services.

Antenatal consultation is counselling aimed at screening and managing pathologies that could endanger pregnancy, besides counselling and preparation for childbirth. It is therefore essential in the follow-up of pregnancy, as it helps to prevent any complications that may arise during pregnancy in order to ensure further health for mom and baby.

In March 2021, in its active file, SYM is taking care of 68 mothers living with HIV enrolled in the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) programme, 18 of whom are pregnant. However, for ANC, they are obliged to go to other health facilities (FOSA). Hence the need for a complete follow-up of PMTCT beneficiaries at SYM, given that sometimes these facilities do not offer them a complete package of services either, notably due to the lack of an ultrasound machine, which is already available at SYM.
"The introduction of ANC service at SYM will be benefit to us. The follow-up of pregnant women will be increased and complete, so it will be easier for these mothers who will no longer have to go through different health facilities in search of this service.  During the prenatal consultation, the woman will be entitled, in addition to the monitoring of the viral load, to other services such as preventive treatment against malaria, long-acting insecticide-impregnated mosquito nets and tetanus vaccination. "Says Dr Emmanuel, a practitioner at SYM.

Father Védaste NKESHIMANA SJ, Executive Director at SYM, welcomes FACSI's support:
"The acquisition of this building will allow SYM's practitioner and nurses to have sufficient working space and it will help us to maximise the output, not only for pregnant women undergoing PMTCT, but also for infants and all other beneficiaries of SYM."
“We would like to express our gratitude to the FACSI team in Rome who approved our project and supported it financially, allowing us to realize one of Service Yezu Mwiza’s dreams to better serve those who need us.” He concludes
FACSI is an apostolic and charitable fund intended to finance the communities and works of the Society as well as other institutions in need.
