Service Yezu Mwiza, in partnership with Action Damien, carries out socio-economic reintegration actions for people already affected by leprosy in the most affected provinces, in particular Bubanza, Cibitoke, Rumonge, Makamba and Rutana.
p>It is in this context that an exchange meeting between the members of the Joint Consciousness Committees (JCC) was organized on January 27-28, 2021 in the provinces of Makamba and Cibitoke in order to evaluate the impact of community involvement in leprosy prevention, promotion of personal and clothing hygiene in order to limit new infections. These CMCs are responsible for closely monitoring the actions of members of associations of people affected by leprosy within the community.
Were present in these exchanges, the directors of schools and high schools, the holders of health centers, the Technicians for the Promotion of Health (TPS), the heads of zones, the local elected officials, the hill chiefs, the religious leaders as well as as SYM supervisors. Being often in contact with the local population, the aforementioned executives are called upon to help in raising awareness on the fight against leprosy, a disease often unrecognized in communities and which, when not treated in time, causes several sequelae.
Prevention consists of personal hygiene and limiting any close physical contact with an infected person for a long period. Leprosy is endemic in several regions of the world and Burundi is not spared from this pathology.
It is transmitted by nasal droplets during close and frequent contact with infected and untreated people. The disease is characterized by skin lesions. If left untreated, these lesions progress and become permanent, affecting the skin, nerves, limbs and eyes.
The SYM in partnership with Action DAMIEN through this socio-economic reintegration project, carry out these actions towards these people affected by leprosy in order to raise awareness of all layers of the population and encourage them to better understand this disease, to take more action. as early as possible in order to combat it definitively. Moreover, to allow all those affected by leprosy who were previously marginalized to join micro-projects through associations, to feel useful, to be able to take care their respective families without asking for help, but rather through revenues from these microprojects executed together.
