SYM: Home visit to Twinyoni district in Ntahangwa commune

Home visits have been initiated in order to improve access to care for PLWHA, to complement the services provided within the care structures and to satisfy as much as possible the different needs of the HIV-infected person and more particularly the PLWHA on ARV treatment.

It is in this context that, on 24 February 2020, Service Yezu Mwiza organized a home visit to Twinyoni district in Ntahangwa commune, in order to know the situation of a beneficiary bedridden, no longer able to move because her health had deteriorated.
”The patient we visited is a destitute widow who lives with her son, also a beneficiary of SYM. Recently her son came to his appointment and informed us that his mother's health continues to deteriorate. We organized this home visit to check on his health, to see what can be done to help her getting better and also to take her viral load. Like most SYM beneficiaries, she, too, is unable to pay for the medication prescribed by the doctors" said Louise, a nurse, and Jean Noel, a health mediator at SYM, during that home visit.

The patient indicates that once she went for a consultation, the doctor gave her medication, which she could not take because it was too expensive. After a few months a benefactor asked him to submit a prescription to see if he could do something, she did her best to find the cost of a consultation with a specialist doctor to get the prescription and the benefactor then gave her two (2) boxes out of three (3) prescriptions.

The nurse managed to take the viral load, which was not easy as the patient also suffered from anorexia and very pronounced weakness.
“This medication helps me a lot in alleviating pain because if I finish a 3-box cure I can spend more than four months without pain and I can go about my activities to feed my children. If SYM could pay me for this drug and also another specialist consultation it would be a good thing” she told us
As being at the service of the most deprived is one of its values, Service Yezu Mwiza decided to help that patient by paying her the necessary consultations with a specialist for a more adequate care.
