Maternal mortality in Burundi is a reality according to DHS III (Third Demographic and Health Survey), the maternal mortality rate is 334 per 100,000 births and the neonatal mortality rate is 23 per 1,000 live births. Among the direct causes of these deaths is a failure to monitor pregnancy.
Aware that it is possible to accelerate the decline in maternal and neonatal mortality, Service Yezu Mwiza (SYM) has extended the package of services it offers to the community through its mobile clinic by introducing obstetric ultrasound for pregnancy monitoring as part of the PMTCT (Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission) of HIV for its beneficiaries and pregnancy monitoring for poorer pregnant women who cannot afford obstetric ultrasound examination.
It is for this reason that a SYM team went to RUBIRIZI on Monday, December 23, 2019 in its routine activities of the mobile clinic, this time in possession of an ultrasound device. A total of six pregnant women have benefited from obstetrical ultrasound and have not failed to show their satisfaction :
" I'm a mother of 6 children and currently I'm 8 months pregnant. During my last prenatal consultation, the nurses were afraid of the excessive measurement of my abdomen (uterine height) and urged me to perform the ultrasound as soon as possible. I lacked the money to go to downtown Bujumbura to have this examination because in RUBIRIZI, there is no ultrasound scanner. I was very worried and in deep sorrow.
Today, it is a great relief because God has brought us benefactors. The ultrasound showed the development of two fetuses in my uterine cavity. It gives me hope and it will allow me to take all the precautions advised before a twin pregnancy. May God bless you and bless Service Yezu Mwiza".testifies one of the beneficiaries
That ultrasound machine is a donation from Gould family foundation, an international humanitarian organization. SYM is committed to using the donation to help reduce maternal and neonatal mortality in the community.
