Awareness sessions for young people in schools and in the community are going well, but the challenges are not lacking, it is in this context that the SYM with the support of GIZ / Health in the implementation of the SRHR project has, on dates from 17 to 20 December organized quarterly meetings in the health centers of Marumane, Kivoga, Teza and Bugarama in order to assess the progress of these awareness-raising activities.
The Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) project is guided by the national development plan and supports the National Programme for Reproductive Health in the implementation of its strategic plan and intervenes in the provinces of Mwaro, Gitega and Muramvya.
During these quarterly meetings, the facilitators at the school and community levels each presented the results of the activities as well as the challenges encountered during the sensitization sessions.
For the school facilitators "The activities went well, even the young people in the schools find the themes relating to SRHR very interesting, the only concern is that, during these sessions, the young people have so many questions and the time intended for this session is too short, so much so that to answer all these questions we are sometimes obliged to exceed the time allotted to the session, the young people once arrived at home, their parents scold them or punished for coming home late.”
As for the community facilitators, one of the Batwa representatives in Marumane network pointed out that "the task was too difficult at the beginning because the men in our community didn't want to hear or even participate in the sessions; but as the saying goes, 'little by little the bird makes its nest', we kept insisting on showing them why it is necessary to participate in our sessions. Today, men have understood that they can no longer continue to turn a deaf ear and are starting to participate in our awareness sessions on topics related to SRHR, sexually transmitted diseases and sexual violence is based on gender ".
The presidents of the networks, each in turn, thanked the facilitators for their involvement in this noble task, and encouraged them to keep up the momentum so that everything from STIs to GBV are eradicated in Muramya province, and even throughout the country.
