CIBITOKE: When men are involved in improving ASRH in their families

Posted on 07/11/2019 - Category: Projet Programme conjoint ...

Most men do not feel concerned about raising children, and when a problem arises, the wrong is often thrown at the woman (mother). it is within the framework of raising the awareness of these men so that they become actively involved in the education of their children, that the Yezu Mwiza Service has organized, from 30 to 31 October 2019, an awareness workshop for men and community leaders of Mabayi on Sexual and Reproductive Health of Adolescents and Young People (ASRH), in the implementation of joint program in province of CIBITOKE.

The objective of this workshop is to involve community members, in this case men, in promoting communication between parents themselves and between parents and children on the one hand and on the other hand on sexual and reproductive health of adolescents and young people.
They have been better informed about how to mobilize other men to change their attitudes and behaviors in order to break down the socio-cultural barriers that prevent young people from accessing correct and complete information in Sexual and Reproductive Health of Adolescents and Young people (ASRH) and various services offered at health centers.

In Burundian society, when, for example, a girl who becomes pregnant, the fault is mainly thrown at her mother as what, she did not educate her daughter while the responsibility for education lies with both parents. During this workshop, it was an opportunity for the invited men to discuss their role as parents (their strengths and weaknesses in the education of their children) and to see together how to properly fulfill their mission to a good future for their children.
Exchanges and group work on the challenges of youth in ASRH in Mabayi Commune

Thus, after having gone through the major challenges of young people in reproductive health, they committed themselves to conducting dialogues with their children on sexual health and on how to help other parents to initiate such dialogues; from which some even left us some testimonies after this workshop:

"The two half-days we just spent together during this workshop really helped me to strengthen the dialogue on youth reproductive health in my family, education on the sexual and reproductive health of our children was almost non-existent and according to the Kirundi saying "Imyenge y'inzu imenywa na nyeneyo". I will then adopt a new behaviour to initiate such dialogues in my family and I hope that it will help me to be exemplary in my locality and to be able to help or influence my fellow citizens to do the same". Jacques BIZIMANA, leader of the RUMVYA hill

Also for Jean NDIMURWANKO of MAYUKI Hill: "These teachings on the sexual and reproductive health of youth and adolescents have allowed me to surpass the shame based on our culture of keeping as a taboo the dialogue about sexuality with our children at the same time to always consider that there are specific activities for men and for women, which creates inequality. So, right now, I'm coming back home with another vision, I will be able to talk to my children about reproductive health and make other men aware of how to conduct these dialogues at home, since we are the ones who have been singled out for during this workshop ".
All the participants in this workshop appreciated the lessons they received, which they described as crucial even though they did not put them into practice. They are then aware of using them and sharing them with other parents in order to overcome the different issues related to sexuality and help their children to reach adulthood with good sexual and reproductive health.
