SYM: Impact of Joint Program Activities in the Community

Posted on 25/10/2019 - Category: Projet Programme conjoint ...

The aim of the joint program is for adolescents and young people to enjoy good sexual and reproductive health. Service Yezu Mwiza runs this program on the community component in 8 provinces, namely: Bujumbura Town, Bujumbura, Cibitoke, Bubanza, Kayanza, Gitega, Kirundo and Muyinga.

Outreach workshops for community leaders (Administrative Leaders, Religious Leaders, and Model Parents) have improved their knowledge about ASRH and increased awareness of the challenges and their consequences facing adolescents and youth.

Participants in these awareness sessions are happy with their transformations :
Thanks to awareness-raising workshops organized by Service Yezu Mwiza, Gertrude, model parent of the Q. Kirwati, Nyakabiga area in the province of Bujumbura Mairie, has made a restitution of what she learned during these workshops by encouraging other parents from neighbouring households to communicate effectively with their children about SRH.
“In the beginning, it was so difficult because some parents said that talking to their children about sexuality is to encourage them to have early sex, but little by little with more teachings, they changed their behavior and succeeded in breaking down what was previously taboo by initiating the dialogue with the WRHA with their children and now are helping to make other parents aware of taking full responsibility for the education of their children.” Testimony Gertrude parent model.

After the continued participation of the hill authorities of Makebuko commune in Gitega province in these awareness workshops, they took ownership of the promotion of ASRH and the fight against GBV through the household-by-household approach and awareness raising at the community level through hill meetings.
"Before I was only dealing with the tasks of a hill chief, but with the teachings of the Yezu Mwiza Service through Menyumenyeshe, I found that I was missing out on my children's education. Dialogue with children on SRH is no longer taboo, but has become an absolute priority. My children participate at least once a month in the education sessions organized by youth friend health center Bungere. As hill leaders, we actively contribute to the reintegration of young people and adolescents who have dropped out of school due to family dysfunction problems," adds Evariste. K hill authority in Makebuko commune.

It should be noted that in all the provinces in the intervention area of the joint program, such changes are more and more meaningful.
But to conclude, the Provincial Head of the Joint Programme in the province of Bubanza points out that his pride is that thanks to the teachings of Service Yezu Mwiza through Menyumenyeshe Project, community leaders (Administrative Leaders, Religious Leaders and Parent Models) from Bubanza, Mpanda and Rugazi have come together to form a VSLA (Village Savings and Loans Association or Association villageoise d'Epargne et de Crédit- AVEC in French). This motivates them to meet on a regular basis and facilitates their community actions in the development of adolescents and young people in the area of sexual and reproductive health.
