Alain-Christy, sj Volunteer

Publié le 13/09/2019 ...
During the few weeks I spent at Service Yezu Mwiza as a volunteer, I particularly remember its "mobile clinic" strategy. That was set up to facilitate vulnerable PLWHAs who had to travel a long way to get their medication. By bringing all its services back to a location very close to their community, this strategy not only reduces this long journey but also reduces the burden of transportation costs as they live in anguish of illness and nameless poverty. It is also an opportunity for them to share their experiences and mutual encouragement. I leave with a beautiful figure of a character who summarizes all the experiences: Martin Royackers, SJ. As a young Jesuit, Martin's life has left its mark on me. He was a Canadian Jesuit who spent part of his life in Jamaica where he went to meet the poor by fighting for social justice. His compassion for the most disadvantaged and discriminated inspired SYM, which chose him as patron of its clinic. After passing in front of the clinic where the name is written, I finally asked myself about its character; and my presence at SYM somehow found a personal meaning.
